I. Course Enrollment and Grading

1. Course registration: You register for courses on the Course Registration Form, which is submitted to DIS prior to the start of the program. Courses should be approved by your home adviser. All prerequisites must be fulfilled before the start of the class.

2. Adding and dropping courses: It is possible to add and drop courses upon arrival, but the hope is that your schedule is settled before you arrive at DIS. You cannot sit in on classes, or, “shop” for classes. If needed, you may add classes until the end of the day on the first Tuesday of classes.

You may add classes only if:

  1. The desired class is not full,
  2. You do not exceed 15 semester hours of credit. (DIS requires a minimum of 12 semester hours of credit made up from 3- or 6-credit courses. However, many home universities require a minimum course load of 15-credits.)
  3. You meet the prerequisites, if any.

You may drop courses until the end of the fourth week of the semester with a few exceptions:

  1. Practicums may not be dropped after the last day of the first full week of the semester.
  2. Core course may not be dropped after arrival in Denmark without a $300 charge unless the switch is between sections. The Registrar will check with the Study Tours Department to see if a change can be accommodated. In addition, written permission to the DIS Office of Academic Support from your home adviser is needed.
  3. Courses may not be dropped after the drop deadline.

3. Pass/Fail Option: If your homeschool allows, DIS students are allowed to take one course per semester on a Pass/Fail basis. Students who wish to take a course Pass/Fail must complete and submit the Pass/Fail Request Form on or before the last day to drop a class. In order to receive a Pass (P) in a course, a minimum of a C or C- (depending on rules of your home school) is required.

4. Grade Appeal: The DIS grade appeal procedure is available to you during and after your stay abroad with a six-month statute of limitation after the final course grade has been issued. The student is required to complete the Grade Appeal Form and submit it to the DIS Academic Director who will review it and, with input from involved faculty or staff, will make a decision within 30-days of submission. The student must provide written evidence indicating a mistake, fraud, or bad faith on the part of an instructor.

5. Academic Honesty: DIS expects all students to abide by the highest standards of intellectual honesty in all academic work. DIS assumes that all students do their own work and credit all work or ideas taken from others. It is the responsibility of each student to make sure that they understand what constitutes academic honesty in every assignment submitted at DIS.

All members of the academic community are expected to behave with respect toward each other and integrity in all that they do. The members of the academic community pledge to:

  • Commit to do their own work at all times without using unauthorized material or resources;
  • Turn in one’s own work and never allow someone else to write any part of a paper or exam;
  • Turn-in or present words or ideas as one’s own which are not;
  • Turning in fabricated data or sources;
  • Sharing specific information after taking the exam about the exam with others who have not yet taking the exam;
  • Violating the intentions or spirit of the DIS Honor Code in any way.

Examples of consequences for violating the Academic Honor Code include, but are not limited to:

  1. Notifying your home university about the violation
  2. Failing the assignment
  3. Failing the course
  4. Expulsions from DIS.
