DIS Copenhagen Semester & DIS Summer Faculty

Ph.D. (Modern History, Northwestern University, 2007). MA (Modern History, Northwestern University, 2002). BA (Modern History, Oxford University, 2001). For two decades, I have taught courses in modern history at Northwestern University in the United States and Qatar in the Middle East. My teaching emphasises creative approaches to learning that builds bridges to the past. I am passionate about bringing history to life and introducing students to new places, people and ideas through innovative, student-focused pedagogy. Secretly, my goal is to turn all students into historians! In 2022 I joined DIS as a teaching and learning specialist in the Learning Lab and a faculty member in the European Humanities Department focusing on 20th Century Europe. Away from the classroom, I research and write about the American Revolution. I am fascinated by the minority of Americans who opposed independence and remained loyal to Britain. What motivated these doomed “loyalists” is at the centre of work. With DIS since 2022.

John Rager

DIS Stockholm Semester Faculty

Prof. Rager earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University.  He is a full professor at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts where he has taught since 1988.  He has always been interested in languages, both human and computer.  His dissertation was in the field of symbolic natural language processing and subsequent to that his research has shifted to (among other things) natural language processing using machine learning.  He has also worked on applying Artificial Intelligence to teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. This work was motivated by the difficulties faced by English teachers in Moldova, where he was a Fulbright Scholar during the 2003-04 academic year. His teaching has often touched on language. For example, he has taught a seminar for first-year students called “Natural and Unnatural Languages.” The material in that course included “traditional” natural language processing as done in artificial intelligence, but also a discussion of rhetorical devices in Shakespeare, a reading of parts of Finnegan’s Wake and a discussion of language evolution.  He has also taught a course on Digital Textual Analysis. That course discussed the computer science (e.g. topic modeling, Naive Bayes classification) used in papers in digital humanities. The course included both Computer Science and Humanities students, who worked together in groups on projects.

In developmental psychology at the Child and Babylab in Uppsala, he seeks to understand how children learn about their world and the social cognitive development of face perception and socialization processes such as gender, race, and ethnicity. In games research at the Games & Society Lab at the Department of Game Design in Visby, Gotland, his work examines the psychology of people, their actions, and emotions in game development, player engagement, learning, and immersion to understand better how different game players (with different personalities, traits, and experiences) interact with various game mechanisms and are, in turn, affected by game experiences.
