Our approach
We want everyone to be able to explore our website, understand what we offer, and access our content without barriers. Accessibility is part of how we design, build, and maintain our website.
We follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, the standard used internationally and referenced in the U.S. Department of Justice’s 2024 ADA web accessibility rule.
Compliance status
Based on recent audits and manual reviews, disabroad.org is largely conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
A small number of known issues remain and are being addressed as part of ongoing development. Accessibility is treated as a continuous process, not a fixed state.
Where we stand
Recent accessibility and performance audits show:
- Lighthouse Accessibility Score: 98 / 100
- Automated Accessibility Scan Score: 97%
- Core Web Vitals: Passed
- Critical Issues Identified: 2
- Passed Automated Checks: 43
- Manual Review Items: 22
Automated tools may label the site as “not compliant,” but this reflects a limited number of specific findings rather than systemic issues.
Technical foundation
The site is built on a structure that supports assistive technologies and flexible navigation:
- Semantic HTML is used to define page structure and meaning
- ARIA roles and attributes are implemented where needed to enhance accessibility
- Heading hierarchy (H1–H6) follows a logical order to support screen reader navigation
- Landmark regions (such as header, main, and footer) are clearly defined
- Link and button text is descriptive and avoids ambiguity
- Form elements include associated labels and accessible names
- Keyboard navigation is supported across menus, links, and interactive components
- Focus states are visible and consistent
- Language attributes are set at page level
These elements ensure that users can navigate and understand content regardless of how they access the site.
Media accessibility and video use
Disabroad.org does not host video content directly. All videos are embedded from third-party platforms, primarily YouTube.
The YouTube player supports several accessibility requirements by default:
- Playback controls allow users to pause, stop, and adjust content
- The player is responsive across devices and screen sizes
- Controls are accessible via keyboard
These features align with key WCAG criteria, including keyboard operability and adaptable layouts.
Continuous improvement
Accessibility is integrated into ongoing design, development, and content processes. This includes:
- Regular audits using automated and manual testing
- Updates aligned with WCAG standards
- Improvements to content workflows, especially for media
- Monitoring third-party dependencies that affect accessibility
