Welcome to Scandinavia

The region we call home, Scandinavia, is a collection of several countries in northern Europe, bound together by geography, shared cultural histories, and similar modern values.

DIS is Scandinavian at its core. We were founded in Denmark in 1959, and today we are located in Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden, the two largest capital cities in the region.

Explore what makes each city special to live and to study in, and read more about the values that Scandinavia embodies.

What sets Scandinavia apart?

The Scandinavian countries, and DIS, share a few core values.

Here are some of the values that you can experience and learn from as you study with us.

Putting people first

Both Denmark and Sweden rank among the best countries in the world for overall livability, safety, and wellbeing.

A lot of that satisfaction is attributed to Scandinavian countries’ strong social safety nets, emphasis on work-life balance, and a cultural focus on slowing down, appreciating the details, and enjoying the quieter moments in life.

Scandinavians won’t say everything is perfect, but when you come here, it feels like the cultures and systems prioritize people at a human level.

Progress balanced with tradition

From the Viking Age to modern times, Scandinavia has played a significant role in the world for thousands of years. Today, Denmark and Sweden manage to balance their historical connections and their future ambitions, holding on to tradition while forging new paths forward.

You can see this balancing act: historic, colorful buildings housing startups that will drive the future.

Sustainability-minded

The Scandinavian nations are among the world leaders in championing sustainable initiatives, transitioning to green energy, and mitigating their impact on the climate.

Both Sweden and Denmark have developed a framework towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, and each country is home to innovative projects and research designed to help them and others around the world build a more sustainable future.

Living in harmony with nature

Scandinavians are always connected to the nature around them, in ways big and small.

Many Swedes are avid hikers, making use of the forests, lakes, and mountains around them to take in the fresh air and explore. In Denmark, where you never find yourself far from the ocean, bathing in the chilly waters is a popular hobby, even in February.
