Ethics/GDPR Considerations for DIS Research

Checklist for DIS Research Students

If you are (1) a DIS student participating as a Research Assistant on a DIS Research project with a DIS faculty mentor, or if you are (2) conducting an approved Independent Research Project while in Denmark or Sweden, there may be ethics and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) considerations that require action on your part from the beginning of the application process. This document gives an overview of required steps, where applicable.

  • When applying (1) to participate as a Research Assistant on a DIS Research project or (2) to conduct an Independent Research Project while in Denmark or Sweden, it is your responsibility to check with your home institution whether they require Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval prior to your participation in the project.
  • When applying to conduct an Independent Research Project at DIS, you will be asked whether you are conducting human subjects research. If you are, you will be required to explain how you are addressing the required ethics and GDPR compliances, including informed consent and handling of personal data.
  • Once you are involved in a DIS Research project in any capacity, it is your responsibility to be aware of and to uphold any ethics and GDPR compliances (if relevant), including obtaining informed consent for collecting of personal data and handling of personal data. Consult with your DIS faculty member for further information.
  • Furthermore, it is your responsibility to be aware that under GDPR it is a breach of the law to transfer identifiable data (i.e., data that can be traced back to individually identifiable persons) outside of the European Union (EU) (e.g., to the U.S.). If you are involved in any capacity with a DIS research project that will transfer data outside the EU (e.g., back to your home institution or for publication in the U.S.), the data must be transferred in anonymized form. Consult with your DIS research mentor for further information.
