Is the current climate crisis only environmental in nature, or does it also have roots that run deeper into our relationships with nature, with one another as humans, and with ourselves? Together, we will travel to Greenland to explore psychological areas such as ecopsychology, psychoanalysis, clinical psychology, and humanistic approaches and critical perspectives. We will explore how institutions and governing systems establish norms and standards of normalcy versus disorderliness while deciding whose perspectives or knowledge are valued and whose are disregarded entirely. This course focuses on the natural science aspects of climate change during the prehistoric times with focus on the glacial and the deglaciation. You gain an understanding of past climate variability, including its underlying causes and mechanisms as a basis for separating natural and anthropogenic climate change and for making useful projections of future climate and assessing its impacts. The course focuses on pre-human times, and the 100,000 year old Greenlandic ice sheet provides an ideal case study.

Is the current climate crisis only environmental in nature, or does it also have roots that run deeper into our relationships with nature, with one another as humans, and with ourselves? Together, we will travel to Greenland to explore psychological areas such as ecopsychology, psychoanalysis, clinical psychology, and humanistic approaches and critical perspectives. We will explore how institutions and governing systems establish norms and standards of normalcy versus disorderliness while deciding whose perspectives or knowledge are valued and whose are disregarded entirely. Moreover, we will try to understand how the legacies of colonialism persist within individuals’ bodies, families, and collective consciousness, molding identities and psychological wellbeing across generations.

The region is highly dynamic and unpredictable carrying significant implications, not only for the indigenous population and states, but also for the global community. As the climate changes, the Arctic becomes more accessible, presenting both new opportunities and challenges. The region is rich in valuable mineral and energy resources, and the emergence of new sea routes holds the promise of shorter travel distances between Europe and Asia. These changes significantly impact food supply routes and military operations.
