About this course

The complex cellular and molecular organization of the brain drives a variety of physiological and cognitive functions. In this course, we explore gene expression and protein distribution at multiple levels of organization, from cell to brain region to organ. We utilize data and resources from the human protein atlas project and other publicly available data sets to learn the advantages and limitations of different approaches, validate results, and utilize the available complementary data to link genes to cells and cellular processes involved in ‘normal’ physiology or disease.

Prerequisites

One year of either biology or neuroscience, and one course in either molecular biology or genetics, all at university level.

Travel on Study Tour

You only take one Core Course per semester, and each Core Course includes two Study Tours: one Short Study Tour to a nearby destination for three days, and one Long Study Tour to another European country for six days.

Led by your faculty, Study Tours take you into real-world settings where you will apply what you’ve learned outside the classroom.

Jan Mulder

PhD in molecular neurobiology (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, 2005), MSc in biology (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, 2000).  Senior researcher and group leader at Science for Life laboratory, department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute since 2010. Group leader of the brain profiling efforts within the Human Protein Atlas project since 2010. Research in identifying the cellular location of proteins linked to brain function and disease. With DIS since 2017.

Nicholas Mitsios

BSc in Molecular Biology (Liverpool, 1998) and PhD in Molecular Biology of Ischemic Stroke (Manchester, 2005). Currently a researcher at the Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute and the Brain Profiling sub-unit of the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) project since 2011. Research focuses on the central nervous systems of mammals, with an emphasis on the identification of proteins involved in brain normal development and pathophysiology. With DIS since 2020.

Long Study Tour

About this tour

The Netherlands is a leading country for neuroscience research and education, home to several highly ranked universities and specialized research institutes. A major contributor in this field is the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN), which operates under the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and focuses on fundamental studies of brain function and its connection to various disorders.

During the Study Tour, you meet and learn from leading researchers in the field of molecular and cellular neuroscience. Through academic lectures, institution and university visits, and tours of labs and clinical facilities, you are able to ask questions as well as discuss research focus areas and clinically relevant aspects within neuroscience, and learn more about the future of neuroscience as a whole.

You have the opportunity to see how the knowledge you learn in the classroom translates into research, clinical application, and education approaches in a real-world environment. The Study Tour is supplemented with visits to museums, historic sites, and cultural landmarks, enabling you to learn more about these two cities, once co-capitals of the strongest empire in Europe.

  • Visit the Neurology department at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam and learn about research focusing on several types of dementias
  • Meet researchers from the Netherlands Institute in Neuroscience in Amsterdam that perform fundamental scientific research in the field of neuroscience
  • Learn how advanced neuroimaging techniques are used to understand the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying human behaviour at the Donders Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging in Radboud University in Nijmegen
  • Visit the Department of Translational Neuroscience at the University Medical Center Utrecht Brain Center and learn about the tools they use to delineate fundamental mechanisms for the development of neural systems

About this tour

With a strong foundation in neuroscience dating back to the 18th century, Austria and Hungary continue to be a strong European presence in this field. For example, as a part of the Medical University of Vienna, the Medical Neuroscience Cluster addresses clinically relevant research activities in all neuroscience areas while the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is dedicated exclusively to neuroscience-based biomedical research.

  • Meet some of the researchers of the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
  • Visit the Molecular Neurobiology group of the Medical University in Vienna to learn about their research within endocannabinoid signaling
  • Learn how imaging techniques can be used to uncover and track neural activity at the Institute of Molecular Pathology, which is a part of the Vienna BioCenter
