Build a unique summer
Last week, Engineering Sustainable Environments students traveled to Oslo for their Session 2 Study Tour! ⭐️
Students toured a high-tech waste sorting facility, learned how Oslo prioritizes pedestrians and public transit, and discovered innovative approaches to sustainable salmon farming in Norway. Throughout the week, they reflected on how to bring these strategies back home.
Time outside academic visits was also spent well! The class enjoyed a walking tour of the city the first day, took in the natural beauty of the fjords by cruise and kayak, and paid a visit to the National Museum.

Natalie (she/her, @vanderbiltstudyabroad) wasn’t sure how to spend the summer after sophomore year. She explored internships, jobs, and research opportunities but ultimately decided to study abroad.
Though a self-proclaimed homebody, Natalie was excited by the chance to step outside her comfort zone, take classes that aligned with her interests, and make Scandinavia her “home base.”

The spring semester has come to an end, and we wrapped it up with our signature celebration—the DIS Festival! 🎉
Last week, students, faculty, staff, and Homestay hosts from @disstockholm and @dis.copenhagen came together for an exciting day of student presentations, exhibitions, and performances.
Held at the end of every semester, the festival is an opportunity to reflect on the incredible work our students have done, both inside and outside the classroom.
Thank you to all who participated!

This past weekend was brimming with cultural celebrations in both Stockholm and Copenhagen.
On Friday, Stockholm celebrated Midsommar Eve, a renowned Swedish holiday marking the summer solstice. Locals gathered to partake in traditions such as raising the maypole, donning flower crowns, and joining in folk songs and dances.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Copenhagen observed Sankt Hans Aften, a celebration of the summer solstice and Saint John (Saint Hans). Bonfires scattered the city as Danes gathered to sing and embrace their heritage.
Both holidays are not only culturally significant but also opportunities for people to come together and celebrate the abundance of sunlight, a true luxury in Scandinavia. ☀️

Last week, over one hundred faculty, senior administrators, and study abroad professionals gathered in Stockholm for the International Educators Conference (IEC).
Over four days, participants examined the impact of global and societal shifts on the study abroad experience. Through a series of collaborative workshops and diverse Field Studies, educators explored a range of topics, from game theory and gamification of the classroom at KTH Royal Institute of Technology to urban ecology at the local botanical gardens.
Thank you to everyone who made the 2024 IEC a resounding success!

Visit startups in the Swedish tech scene, explore Danish design history at architectural sites, and get to know each city through an academic lens.

Experience summer in Scandinavia
Summer is a special time in Scandinavia, where locals flock outside to enjoy the seemingly endless daylight and the numerous festivals and events.
You can make yourself at home in each city, swimming in the Copenhagen canals, exploring Stockholm’s archipelago, and joining in midsummer traditions.

Explore Europe on Study Tour
Travel to a different European destination on a faculty-led Study Tour to see your course topic in real-life contexts in a new culture.
Study Tour is included in all courses under Session 2, Architecture & Design Session, Furniture Design Sessions, and select courses in Labs, Research, & Practicums Session.
Studying in both Stockholm and Copenhagen?

Transportation between sessions
If you choose multiple Summer Sessions in both Stockholm and Copenhagen, DIS provides transportation between the cities at the end of your session. The bus ride includes stops for sightseeing, lunch, and a chance to connect with fellow students on the same journey.
You may also arrange your own travel if you prefer. Check-in at your new housing starts on Arrival Day.
Curious about where you will live?
Arctic Experiential Studies: Greenland
Summer 2026 – 6 weeks | 6 credits
The Arctic sits at the center of today’s major global challenges, including climate change and rising geopolitical tensions. Greenland offers a rare and powerful lens through which to explore these dynamics.
This fully funded, six-week summer session takes you beyond the classroom and into one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions. With time spent in both Copenhagen and Greenland, you’ll explore the Arctic through hands-on fieldwork, transdisciplinary courses, and deep cultural engagement.
Designed for students with a strong sense of purpose, this program combines academic rigor with embodied learning and a commitment to reciprocity with Greenlandic communities.
