Do you live within walking distance of DIS Copenhagen?
If your answer is yes:
You are considered a “walking distance” student, which means that DIS will not provide you with transportation coverage from your housing to DIS.
If you choose to use public transit during your time in Copenhagen, the DSB app is a great choice for buying tickets. With the app, you can buy tickets in advance and don’t need to worry about buying physical tickets.
If you haven’t downloaded the DSB app, read this blog first.
While you will need to purchase your own tickets for personal travel, you can invoice your ticket to DIS in some instances. Learn more below.
If your answer is no:
You are considered a “Commuter Card student”, which means that DIS will provide you with transportation coverage from your housing to DIS through a Commuter Card.
With your Commuter Card, you are covered for specific zones that you can see on your app. For example, you should never have to buy a ticket on DSB to get from your home to DIS, or vice versa, as that is covered on your Commuter Card. If you are traveling elsewhere within your zones (like the grocery store, for example), your Commuter Card will still have you covered.
If you haven’t downloaded your Commuter Card yet, read this blog first.
If you are traveling outside of your zones on public transit, though, your Commuter Card will not apply. You are responsible for having a valid ticket for your journey. In some cases, you may be able to invoice the cost of your ticket to DIS. Read more below.
How to buy a single ticket in the DSB app
Step 1: Once you arrive at station or stop from where you’ll be departing, open the DSB app
Step 2: Before you board the bus/train/metro, select which mode of transportation you will be using.
Step 3: For your method of payment, you’ll see choices for “Invoice” (which will charge DIS) or “Credit Card” (which will charge your own credit card).
You can select “Invoice” for:
- Getting to and from Field Studies
- Getting to and from Study Tours (for example, a train ticket to the Copenhagen Airport would qualify)
- Getting to and from external DIS classes
- Getting to and from DIS activities
- Visiting Host program: 400 DKK stipend (approximately four round trips)
- Homestay students: 400 DKK stipend to visit other DIS students in your Homestay Network
You must select “Credit Card” for:
- Personal travel (for example, taking the bus to a café outside your zones)
- If you are eligible for extra funds (i.e. Homestay or Visiting Host), then use this option once you have spent your entire stipend
Once you’ve selected your payment method, swipe the “Check in” button to begin your journey.
Step 4: Once you are checked in, you have your ticket on your phone and ready to show if the ticket inspectors request to see it.
Step 5: If you need to change to a bus, train or metro, remember to report this in the app and update your journey.
Step 6: Once you have reached your final stop, slide the toggle and ‘Check out’ thus ending your trip. Make sure to enable the automatic check out function in case you forget!
To set up automatic checkout:
- Under your ‘Profile,’ then click the settings cog in the upper right hand corner.
- Select ‘Notifications’
- Select ‘Set up check out help’
- Choose the option ‘Automatic check out’
