The Beautiful Game: Soccer in Contemporary Society and Culture

About this course

In recent decades, soccer has become a highly profitable and prominent global cultural phenomenon. This course looks at the sport as a reflection of society with historical ties to questions of national identity, ethnicity, gender, class, religion, and politics. We explore the particular dynamics of this sport through readings on games and play and also attempt to understand why ‘The Beautiful Game’ inspires the worlds of film, art, literature, video games, and fashion.
