Healing Gardens and Wellness Green Spaces

Course note

This course will begin running in fall 2026.

About this course

This course explores the role of healing gardens and wellness greenspaces in fostering physical, mental, and social wellbeing. The benefits of horticultural therapy are well documented, from PTSD treatment for veterans to sensory rehabilitation for those with neurological injuries or dementia, to psychological support for cancer patients. Healing gardens can also support caregivers and families, reducing stress and improving mental health for everyone, as well as foster community by breaking down socio-cultural barriers.

We will trace the development of healing gardens from medieval cloister gardens to contemporary urban and healthcare settings, evaluating the therapeutic, social, and economic value of investing in wellness-focused landscape principles and design.
