Marseille

Postcolonial Europe: Narratives, Nationalism, and Race
Postcolonial Europe: Narratives, Nationalism, and Race

About this tour

Marseille is the oldest city in France and historically the city’s mediterranean port was the gateway to France’s colonial empire. Situated closer to North Africa than to Paris, Marseille is the most cosmopolitan city in France and prides itself of its cultural diversity. Unlike inner Paris, which has lost much of its soul to tourism, Marseille has preserved a more authentic and unpolished charm.

During this Study Tour, we will explore the complex identities that make up Marseille today. Through conversations with local artists and activists, city walks, and food adventures, we will get a sense of the multiple cultural and social layers of this vibrant city. We will also visit the breathtaking fiords, les Calanques, and take time to reflect on and absorb the many narratives and perspectives offered during our explorations of the city.
