What’s involved in the art of retelling the stories of our collective past, so they are relevant to our lives today?

Whether you’re an avid reader, an author yourself, or interested in the stories of the past, be sure to join this DIS Talk with faculty member, Tommy Heisz, an established author of nonfiction. In his role as author, and based on thorough research, Tommy aims to shed light on forgotten historical events through vivid storytelling. His most recent book,’ De dømte kvinder’ (The Convicted Women), is based on criminal cases from the early 1900s – a time when Denmark was hit by a wave of cases of concealed births and infanticide. In an earlier book, he rolled out the dramatic events that took place in Denmark when the Spanish Flu, a lethal influenza pandemic, swept the world in 1918 and became one of the worst outbreaks in human history.

In this Talk, Tommy will share how he uses creative writing techniques of literature to retell a true story, an approach that he also uses when teaching Creative Nonfiction Writing at DIS.
