Housing During Your Summer Study Abroad
Where you live is an important part of your time abroad, and hopefully the basis for a rich cultural and social experience! DIS Summer Housing Options aim to give you the opportunity to have the independence to focus on and explore your academics, while living in safe and convenient locations within the Greater Copenhagen area.
Getting To and From Your DIS Housing
Part of living and studying in Copenhagen means that, just as the Copenhageners do, you commute by bike, bus, train, or metro – or a combination of these! Whether it be to get to classes at DIS, field studies, study tour departures, or other activities, you can expect that commuting will be a part of your daily life.
More and more Danish and international students live in the greater Copenhagen area and commute by public transportation or bicycle daily. Copenhagen’s public transportation is clean, safe, punctual, and efficient. So while the commute may seem intimidating, keep in mind that one million people hop on the metro every week, and about 360,000 people daily on the train – so your daily transportation will be no different than the average Copenhagener’s.
Summer at DIS – Housing Options for You to Rank
Unless otherwise advised by your home institution, you have three housing options from DIS to rank. You are encouraged to maximize your involvement in local culture during your time abroad, no matter what your housing.
Read the following options carefully before ranking your first and second preference:
- Residential Community
- Rented Room
- Note: This option is open to students studying at DIS for a minimum of six weeks. Therefore, Rented Room is not available for students that are only taking Session 1, Session 2, or Session 3.
If you are interested in arranging your own housing while in Copenhagen, find more information about Independent Housing (Self-Arranged) here.
DIS Housing Policies – Guaranteed Housing
DIS guarantees housing to all students who request, and pay for, DIS-arranged housing. Additionally, DIS works hard to ensure that you have a meaningful stay in your housing.
To learn about how DIS matches you in the best possible housing placement, go to DIS Housing Placement Process.
Requesting & Applying for DIS Housing
The deadline for requesting summer housing is approximately 1.5 – 2 months before the arrival date. To apply, provide correct and detailed information on Student Registration.
What Each Housing Option Provides Under the Comprehensive Housing Fee
Find out what is included in each housing option by reading the Comprehensive Fee for All DIS Housing Options here.
Finding Out About Your Housing Placement
Approximately 10 days prior to arrival, you will receive your housing placement and exact address.
Housing Between Sessions
We hope you stay for several summer sessions at DIS! If you are enrolled in two or more consecutive sessions (for instance, Sessions 1 and 2 – or Sessions 1, 2, and 3), then your housing will extend over the weekend between sessions.
You are encouraged to enroll in Session 1 and Session 3. However, be aware that DIS does not offer housing over the three-week break between these sessions. Additionally, if you are a spring student staying for the summer, unfortunately DIS cannot extend your current semester housing until your Summer Session starts.
