Academic FAQs for Carleton College

Where do I find the class schedule with meeting times and classroom location?

You can check your course pages and official course list on Canvas. All information is listed on each course’s front page. Please make sure you’re checking Canvas for accurate class meeting times.

The classes listed on your Canvas page are the classes in which you are enrolled. Conversely, you will not be officially enrolled in a class until the course appears in Canvas.

If what is listed on your Canvas page is not what you expected, please email Academic Support immediately.

May I drop or add a course?

Carleton College students will not be able to drop or add classes after arrival except under extraordinary circumstances.

May I audit a course?

No, DIS does not allow students to audit courses or to “sit in” on courses.

May I take a course as pass/fail?

Carleton College students must take all classes for a letter grade.

How do I pick up my textbooks?

Books for all of your classes will be delivered to you directly in your first class on Tuesday, September 15th. If you don’t have class on Tuesdays, you should pick up your books in the DIS Library at Vestergade 23.

Where can I find information about final exams or final project due dates?

The final exam schedule will be released and you will be notified no later than the end of September. Otherwise, all information will be on your course syllabi. Not all courses will have in-person final exams, but instead, may have a project, a presentation, a final paper, or make-up classes during finals week.

Important Note: We do not reschedule final exams, so if you make plans to leave earlier than Wednesday, December 9, and then a faculty member adds a class or exam, you will either have to change your plans and absorb the costs or receive an “F” on your missed coursework. Therefore, the prudent thing to do is plan to leave no earlier than Wednesday, December 9.

How do I receive academic accommodations?

As a part of your registration with DIS, you completed the Health Information Form, which asks about disability accommodations. If you submitted the requested information from your home institution, you should have received an email from Academic Support on September 7 telling you which learning accommodations DIS is able to accommodate during your time abroad and how to use them.

If you did not receive an email from Academic Support regarding your academic accommodations, please email acadsupp@dis.dk as soon as possible.

Important Note: Academic Support cannot always assist with academic accommodations disclosed and requested after your arrival.

Is attendance at all classes and Field Studies mandatory?

YES! Attendance at all class meetings is required, and each student is individually responsible for all material covered or assigned in class. Likewise, attendance at Field Study sessions and Study Tour is required. In fact, your attendance and participation is graded. If you miss a single class that only takes place once a week, that counts as two absences. Please see COVID-19 policies below:

COVID-19 and Attendance

We all have a collective responsibility to avoid the spread of COVID-19 at DIS. If you are sick or have symptoms of COVID-19 (dry cough, high temperature, breathing difficulties, sore throat, headache, muscle pain), please stay at home and inform your faculty that you won’t be in class or at a Field Study – this will count as an excused absence. Keep up with the work and join activities via distance learning, if you are able to and if it is an option in your class (check with your faculty). If you are too sick to do work, reach out to the Care Team at care@dis.dk for medical support and coordinate with your faculty to make up missed class time.

If you are unable to attend classes, virtually or physically, due to illness for more than two classes, your faculty may contact you and/or the Registrar to determine how to proceed.

Can I meet my Core Course at the Study Tour destination?

No, all students must travel to the Study Tour destination(s) with their class, without exception.

Who do I contact if I need help with Canvas?

If you’re unable to find or access materials that your faculty has uploaded to Canvas, please contact your faculty directly. Other problems with Canvas can be directed to canvashelp@dis.dk.

What if my religious observation conflicts with an academic requirement?

DIS understands that religious observations are important to some students. If there are situations where the religious observation conflicts with a scheduled academic commitment, the student should come up with options and discuss them with the faculty member. There can be no compromise of academic integrity in the course, but if the observation does not interfere significantly in the faculty’s opinion, the student will be excused.

How do I get my final grades at the end of the semester?

You will receive an email grade report of your unofficial final grades 30 days after the end of the term. A hard copy of your Final Grade Report will be mailed to Carleton College automatically from the DIS North American Office. Final grades will be withheld if you owe money to DIS or other related institutions, have not returned library books, or has outstanding restitution because of damage caused to housing or DIS facilities.

If you’re in doubt about your progress in a class, you should be able to see all of your grades in Canvas. If a grade is missing, please check with your faculty. It may be helpful to know that DIS does not round-up grades, so keeping up with your grades will ensure that you don’t receive an unfortunate surprise at the end of the semester.
