The memorial ceremony was held at Copenhagen City Hall with over 600 people in attendance.
Frank Jensen, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, welcomed the families of the deceased, representatives from their home institutions, DIS students, staff, faculty, and others from the greater DIS community.
DIS Executive Director, Malene Torp, opened the ceremony with a moment of silence and continued by sharing the lasting impact that the two students had made on their DIS faculty and fellow students. She expressed her deepest sympathy to the families, saying,
“I hope this gathering can bring you at least a little comfort in this impossible situation. Please know that the entire DIS community deeply cares and grieves with you. We are greatly saddened by your loss.
Two promising lives ended much too soon. Both students embraced their semester abroad with such energy and curiosity.”
Family members and representatives from the home universities shared personal anecdotes and memories of the students. The ceremony opened and closed with music played by members of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.
Attendees were also invited to contribute to the books of remembrance for the families.
