DIS Honors Partnerships and Shares Program Updates at NAFSA Conference

This June, DIS attended the annual NAFSA conference in Denver, Colorado.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators is an annual conference of over 10,000 professionals in the field of international education. Seven DIS staff participated in the conference, and throughout the week met with colleagues to discuss topics such as DIS Stockholm, enrollment and admission, curriculum, and collaboration opportunities.

Institutional Relations Assistant Director Jon Mayfield presented at the Increasing Diversity Outreach and Support in International Education poster fair with a presentation titled, ‘Scandinavian Sex Positivity and Study Abroad: Opportunities and Challenges’.

DIS hosted a dinner for partner universities to kick off the conference and share updates and highlights. Executive Director Malene Torp addressed latest developments at DIS, and recognized Mary Dando from University of Colorado Boulder for her dedication to the university’s partnership with DIS, and for establishing the opportunity for Danish students to study at Boulder.

Throughout the conference, each organization had a booth to display its program. This year, DIS added unique Scandinavian components including a photo booth with a Copenhagen street scene and bike, Scandinavian furniture and wood floors, Danish chocolates, and Swedish marshmallow treats. NAFSA participants could take photos with the Copenhagen street while sitting on the bike and pedaling to generate electricity.

Jon said the conference was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with partners and spark new ideas for the program.

“Attending the NAFSA conference is a key piece of our on-going dialog with our partners. We attend concurrent sessions on burning issues within the field and beyond, and meet one-on-one with partners to ensure our continued alignment as we plot the trajectory of U.S. higher education. This year, we brought a little piece of Scandinavia’s bicycle culture and dedication to green energy to the expo hall. Conference participants were invited to #ridewithDIS, recharging their phones with bicycle-generated electricity.”

Each year, NAFSA is a time to connect with colleagues, recognize valuable partnerships, and celebrate program milestones. DIS looks forward to participating in NAFSA next year in Los Angeles.
