DIS Selects Anders Uhrskov Scholarship Recipient for Summer

Olivia Gusmano, Temple University, will study child development and the Danish education system during her two sessions at DIS this summer.

The Anders Uhrskov Leadership Scholarship is awarded to one student who possesses leadership skills and is exceptionally enthusiastic about their academic experience. Anders Uhrskov was the director of DIS for 27 years, and was dedicated to developing global leaders of the future through education abroad.

Olivia will be taking Children in a Multicultural Context in Session 2 and Child Development: Theory and Practice in Session 3. When asked what she is most looking forward to, Olivia said she is enthusiastic to navigate teaching in a new cultural context as well as getting to know DIS staff and faculty throughout the summer.

“The courses on education [at DIS] seemed to fit best with what and how I want to learn. These summer courses will allow me to study the Danish education system before engaging in a teaching practicum. This means I can get a much more comprehensive and culturally responsive experience as a future teacher.

Winning this award has made a huge difference in my family’s life. This award, in conjunction with the Vira I Heinz Scholarship, pays for nearly all of the expenses of my trip, meaning that my younger brother can also have his own summer study experience. This is something that my family was unable to pay for prior to winning this award. Before DIS and the Anders Uhrskov Award, I was afraid I would never be able to afford study abroad during my undergraduate years. DIS has truly made my dream come true.”

Congratulations to Olivia! We look forward to welcoming her to Copenhagen in a few weeks.
