The collection is comprised of 100+ global, peer-reviewed case studies of ‘civic media’ and ‘civic technology, organized into four sections: ‘Play + Creativity,’ ‘Systems + Design,’ ‘Learning + Engagement,’ and ‘Community + Action.’ The goal of the collection is to show the many efforts of individuals and groups used in practice to “benefit or disrupt a community or institution outside of one’s intimate and professional spheres.” Derek’s case study, titled, ‘Better Reykjavik: Open Municipal Policymaking’ can be read online here.
Alongside The Civic Media Project is a forthcoming book, titled, Civic Media: Technology, Design, Practice, which will include 25 of these case studies – including Derek’s.
At DIS, Derek teaches Rewriting Democracy: iCitizenship and E-governance in a Nordic Context, where he focuses on the topic of civic engagement and its dynamic relationship to technology. Given permission from fellow contributors and the relevancy of the material, Derek has already been able to share several case studies from the Project with his students at DIS.
