In 2010, Julianne Jones, a DIS Architecture alumna from fall 2005, opened Vergennes Laundry, a Scandinavian design-inspired ‘Wood-Fired Bakery’ in Vergennes, Vermont together with her husband, Didier Murat.

The shop’s name comes from its origin as a laundromat. After Julianne and her husband bought the space with the help of crowd-funding, the couple re-imagined the interior. They took inspiration from Scandinavian and French design, and together built their bakery from the bottom-up. White walls, minimal décor, a rustic atmosphere, and Alvar Aalto’s Artek birch chairs now fill the space, a design that was strongly influenced by Julianne’s architectural studies at Middlebury and at DIS in Copenhagen.
