Note: This Study Tour last runs in fall 2019.

Core Course Week gives you the opportunity to take a closer look into how cultures are communicated verbally and non-verbally. We will use Sweden and Denmark as case studies to identify differences in communication within and across cultures. Additionally, you will hone in on your intercultural competencies and abilities to communicate with people from other cultural backgrounds. Through visits to innovative media companies, interviews with professional communicators, and tours to explore the communication landscape, you will critically examine culturally delineated boundaries of communication within Scandinavia.

In addition, the short study tour is supplemented with cultural events to help you learn more about Swedish and Danish history and culture, as well as give you a more well-rounded understanding of the communities in which you are studying. Touring museums, visiting historic sites, and enjoying traditional food will further your understanding of how culture is communicated.

Tour Objectives

  • Compare and contrast communication perspectives and methods in neighboring Scandinavian countries
  • Gain a more nuanced understanding of how cultures are communicated verbally and non-verbally
  • Understand the challenges of communication between majority and minority cultures and reflect on your own cultural values and how they influence your communication with others

Possible Activities

  • Talk with a political reporter at Sydsvenskan, a Swedish newspaper, about communication in a multi-cultural setting
  • Discuss with journalists at Swedish Television (SVT), Sweden's public TV broadcaster, about cross-border co-operation between Nordic national broadcasters
